This series of images has been inspired by the poems of Ted Hughes in his anthology, ‘Remains of Elmet’ (published by Faber and Faber and available HERE). He was inspired to write the poems upon seeing the accompanying photographs of the wild Yorkshire landscape by Fay Godwin.
Her monochrome photographs are included in the original printings of the book. She managed to capture the savage beauty of the Yorkshire uplands and edgelands, where the hard millstone industry was etched into hills and valleys. Hughes subsequently wrought his magic in words, painting the finest written description of this place I have ever read. My copy of the book, all the more treasured as it is signed by Hughes, is the inspiration for this project.
