There is no better time of year than winter to explore the photographic opportunities of Scotland. Here, better than anywhere else in the UK, is there a chance of snow, hoar frost, frozen streams and rivers – all the wonderful things a landscape photographer loves.

This tour has been designed to make the most of both the potential conditions and the finest landscapes Scotland has to offer. We will spend the first afternoon and following morning making images around Glencoe, Rannoch Moor and Glen Etive before heading north and west to our destination for the middle of the week on the Isle of Skye.

Based in our beautiful hotel in Portree, centrally located to have good access to the whole island, we will choose our locations each day based on the light and weather conditions. The places we have to visit could include The Old Man of Storr, The Quiraing, Neist Point, The Fairy Pools, Elgol, Loch Cill Chriosd, Sligachan and Taisker Bay.

While these are all well known locations, our aim is not to go about collecting cliched images (although you can if you wish). Rather we will be looking to encourage you to immerse yourself in these stunning, wild places and search out your own interpretation of them – seeking compositions which tell your own story of the place and inject emotion and passion into the pictures. For this reason our visits to the locations won’t be whistle stop ‘location bagging’ and off stops – they will involve spending time at each place to allow us to explore and interpret, to get under the skin of the landscape and really find something interesting to capture.

I am delighted that my co-leader on this tour is my good friend and superb landscape photographer, Terry Gibbins. Extensively published, a fellow leader for Light and Land and an accomplished leader (as well as being a really nice guy) Terry is great at putting the clients first and being totally unselfish in sharing his knowledge of photography along with his love of the landscape. He always goes the extra mile.

The tour begins on Monday 14th January in Edinburgh. We will pick up clients at both Edinburgh station and Edinburgh airport around mid-day before heading straight to Rannoch Moor (with a brief lunch stop en-route). We will work the area until dark before descending to the Loch Leven Hotel, where your two course evening meal is included. (as is a full Scottish breakfast and a packed lunch the following day). The hotel also has the rather nice distinction of having its own distillery. You see, we try to think of your every need! We are up for sunrise the following morning and the hotel are delaying breakfast for us so we can enjoy it to the full. Then we check out and head for Skye, making images en-route.

Our beautiful 4 star hotel on Skye is the Cullin Hills, with views over Portree Bay and the magnificent Cullin range. As well as your beautiful room and breakfast we include a three course three choice evening meal and a packed lunch every day here. The packed lunch allows us to stay on location if we are enjoying ourselves, but rest assured we will be dropping in to cafes if they are open also.

On Friday 18th January we will head back to Rannoch Moor and Glencoe for another photographic visit to break our journey back to Edinburgh, staying again at the Loch Leven Hotel (with evening meal and breakfast included). Again, as time allows in the morning we can shoot up on the hills although it may be best to have an early breakfast and shoot afterwards as time may not permit us to return to the hotel and then get to Edinburgh in time for trains and flights on Saturday 19th January.

If the weather should be too inclement at any time (and, although it is rare in Scotland, it has been known, apparently 😉 ) Terry and I will make good use of the time for you by giving talks on Photoshop, Lightroom and printing techniques. These we will record for you so you can download them as high definition videos after the tour, so you have them as a learning resource for the future. I am happy to teach alternative techniques on the tour, such as ICM and multiple exposures, for any who wish to investigate these but this tour will also be geared around more classic landscape photography too for those who wish to pursue this.

The group size is strictly limited to ten. We prefer a small group size to leader ratio so for those wanting tuition and help, there is plenty of time to receive it. Also, with two nine seater mini buses there is loads of room for everyone to spread out and travel in luxury rather than being crammed in together. Smaller groups also allow for us all to get to know each other better and enjoy a great group dynamic while we are away.
