This gallery is made up of the five images I exhibited at the Vision 9 group show at the OXO Gallery on Londons South Bank in March 2018, plus some others of the series I was unable to show due to space constraints.
The title of the collection, and the lead image, is taken from a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson, entitled ‘Break, Break, Break’.
Break, break, break,
On thy cold gray stones, O sea!
And I would that my tongue could utter
The thoughts that arise in me.
O, well for the fisherman’s boy,
That he shouts with his sister at play!
O, well for the sailor lad,
That he sings in his boat on the bay!
And the stately ships go on
To their haven under the hill;
But O for the touch of a vanished hand,
And the sound of a voice that is still!
Break, break, break,
At the foot of thy crags, O sea!
But the tender grace of a day that is dead
Will never come back to me. (1834)
I made the images at a time when I was experiencing the great sadness and loss of the death of loved ones. Not in my own family, but the loved ones of those very close to me. Seeing the anguish of those I love as they suffered was affecting me in profound ways and this was influencing the work I was making. I came across this poem at the time, written by Tennyson during a time of personal loss in his life, and it really resonated with me, especially the lines
‘But O for the touch of a vanished hand,
And the sound of a voice that is still’
