The Old Lie

In the long dark days of endless night
As the black dog prowls the soul less bright
As clarity clouds confusions blight
And all ascends upward into the pit
They kindly ask, dreading the reply

Then the comforting familiarity of fear
Folds, enfolds, coddles the caress
Constricts, constrains
bleeds the bloodless

The mind given over, too tired to fight
Over lives unlived, unloved and all undone
Threads unpicked, frayed and unwon.

Untrodden ways too often walked
Unsung songs, without music talked
Of pain unfelt and tears uncried
Of stories untold and lives undied

As the water rises and the air subsides
Friends as echoes, rushing tides
Clinging to the pretence, veiled in smiles
Being that thing they want me to be
Long after I left, too tired to flee

I lie again… I’m fine.
