In the Arabic world, where these images were made, the home is regarded as the centre of life. Families are taught to look inwards, that within the family circle they will find love, peace and security – it is a sanctuary.
Thus, while the homes have windows and doors out of necessity for access and light they are not used to look outwards.
I have been drawn on my visits to the people of these lands – they are open, hospitable, friendly and have a passion for life. Their deep love of family is clearly evident. The small windows into their homes often speak of neglect, demonstrating the importance they give to what lies within rather without. As an artist, this concept, coupled with the textural beauty of the portals themselves have made for an engrossing study.
