This series, entitled after the Spanish for ‘Harmony’ were made at the incredible “Ciudad de las Artes y las Ciencias” (City of Arts & Sciences) in Valencia, southern Spain.
I can’t remember being overwhelmed by architecture as I was in the pre-dawn light of my visit for a very long time. This collection of buildings, designed by Santiago Calatrava and Félix Candela, sit in the meandering dried river bed that runs through the city and is now given over to the people – to walk, run, play, relax and learn.
Each construction is formed of sensuous sweeping curves clad in the local pale white Valencian ceramic tiles – it is a place so futuristic you feel as though you have walked onto the set of a science fiction film.
Each area is set aside for some aspect of the arts or sciences – for concerts, for exhibitions, an aquarium, an interactive museum of science, a stadium – all surrounded by shallow still pools, illuminated and reflecting the buildings above.
I was transfixed and inspired – these images are the work I produced during my short visit. I long to return, for there is so much there. An extraordinary place which harmonises the sciences and the soul.
